Police in Kericho have arrested two men suspected of ferrying cannabis along the Kisumu–Kericho highway following a swift operation triggered by a public alert.

The suspects were stopped by officers from Sokohuru Police Post while transporting the drugs on a motorcycle believed to have been used for regional distribution.

During the search, officers recovered a suitcase containing 26 bales of cannabis weighing about 50 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh1.5 million.

The suspects were immediately taken into custody and are being processed ahead of their arraignment in court.

Police confirmed that the recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits.

“The arrest followed a tip-off from the public, which prompted a rapid response and the interception of a suspicious motorcycle believed to be transporting the narcotics for distribution,” the police statement read in part.

The National Police Service commended the officers for their swift response, saying the operation demonstrated the success of intelligence-led policing in combating the narcotics trade.

“The Service remains steadfast in combating narcotics and continues to employ intelligence-led enforcement operations targeting supply chains, transport corridors, and concealed distribution cells,” the statement said.

Authorities have stepped up crackdowns along major highways and transport corridors in western Kenya, where drug networks have been thriving.

Police said increased public vigilance and cooperation are crucial to dismantling these syndicates.

“The Service encourages continued public cooperation in reporting suspicious drug-related activities through the toll-free emergency hotlines 999, 911, 112, or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000,” added the statement.

Security agencies have intensified surveillance across hotspot regions, reiterating their commitment to disrupt illegal drug supply chains and keep communities safe.
